The Price of Her Beauty

She rises with a million thoughts racing through her mind
Wondering how can she have thoughts of this kind
She never knows the exact reason
And because of that she can’t shake this affliction
Knowing that she bears a cross for her dark skin and kinky hair
She gets excited just from a man’s stare
Beyond her curves she knows he doesn’t care
His mind is somewhere else; approximately below her belt
He can’t handle a woman of depth, that’s not his taste
His perfect woman comes with bone straight hair, a “foreign” face, and an ass that don’t match her waist
So finding a king who recognizes she’s a queen has become one of many burdens on her shoulders
This is what she tells herself to justify why her standards are lower
In reality she’s her own enemy
Thinking this way has ruined her mentally
But whose to blame?
Her own insecurities or those who promote self-hate with their fame
Only God knows the answer to that question
Her troubled mind finds rest knowing that no matter what SHE will always love her reflection

Many don’t know how much I appreciate the arts, but one of my closeted dreams is to one day write. Maybe even do it in my spare time like I do now. I am not sure who is the artist of this beautiful picture, but I fell in love with it a couple days ago. Prior to seeing this I was listening to the radio and the topic was, “Do dark skinned women have issues with women of lighter skin?” It was very interesting to listen to the responses and from what I noticed most of the women of both tones were saying that men and mainstream media continue to perpetuate this “war” between women of color. So as I stared at what appears to be a beautiful woman with dark skin and big hair hanging her head, these were the words that filled my paper.
